| If you are an Army Officer, it’s up to you to manage your career effectively. One way to do that is to actively manage your Officer Evaluation Reports. In this article, I want to share a few helpful things you can do to get the best Officer Evaluation Report (OER) possible. Let’s get started. # 1 Do Your Best First and foremost, you should always do your best in your job. That means, don’t be a slacker. You should always go the extra mile and take pride in what you do. It would be foolish to think you deserve a good OER if you aren't good at your job. # 2 Document Your Achievements The next thing you should do is document your achievements. At the end of each week, you should sit down and write down your major achievements for the week. That way you can keep track of everything you did during the rating period. I recommend you keep a journal. # 3 Ask Your Boss for Feedback If possible, you should try to sit down with your boss once a week, or even once a month, and review your work performance. Although they are required to do this quarterly, I think it’s much more effective if they sit down with you more often than that. This way you will get feedback and make any improvements if needed. # 4 Update Your Army OER Support Form Once a Month At the end of each month, you should take your achievements that you have written down and update your OER Support Form. Your OER Support Form should be a living, breathing document that you update often. # 5 Write Your First Draft of Your OER 30 days before your Officer Evaluation Report is due, you should write a first draft of your OER and give it to your boss. Tell them that you know they are busy and you just wanted to save them some time. Most bosses will appreciate this. And in most cases they won't make any changes to what you gave them. # 6 Review Your OER Before You Signing It Assuming you followed the advice mentioned above, you should have a good final OER. Make sure you review your OER before you sign it. Check the administrative data and comments. Look for typos and inaccuracies. After you review it, assuming everything is fine, sign it and give it back to your supervisor. # 7 Check Your OER in AKO or IPERMS After you sign your OER and turn it in, you want to wait another 30 to 90 days and then check your official file to make sure it was turned in, processed and profiled. Once it is in your records, get another copy and keep it in your official file. In summary, managing your career and your Officer Evaluation Report is your responsibility. If you follow the advice in this article, you will be well ahead of your peers with your OER and career. Army Officer Evaluation Report, OER Support Form |
